A Look at Pop Culture: Phil Tippett

BTS of Phil Tippet

The man behind the Monsters

In this new blog feature we look to shed some light on those who helped create such iconic characters, games and movies at the very heart of modern day pop culture.

Phil Tippett is not a household name but you will know his work. The Oscar-winning stop-motion animator and designer is responsible for many fantasy creatures and sci-fi set pieces in cinema history. From creating aliens that defined the diversity of Star Wars, to seamlessly merging practical animation and CGI in Jurassic Park. ‘My Life in Monsters’, a VICE documentary, chronicles Tippett’s legendary life work and is a must watch!

Tippett has now returned to his origins and is currently involved with his ongoing “Mad God” stop-motion animation series, currently funded through Kickstarter.

Leaked Star Wars: Episode IX Poster

Ep IX Star Wars Poster

Star Wars: Episode IX Promo Poster revealed

A promo poster for Star Wars: Episode IX has found its way onto the web. This must of been for internal use only and has somehow slipped out of Lucasfilms web of secrets. What is interesting is that the poster reveals a lot of what fans can expect from the last film in the trilogy. Of course this is more than likely a mock up, so a lot of elements shown in this poster are subject to change.

Our Thoughts:

As you will see in the image, the poster shows our heroes in new outfits, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) wielding the Skywalker lightsaber that looks to of been repaired. We can see our favourite rebel starfighters flying off in various, unseen colour schemes, while a new variant on the TIE fighter has snuck in at the bottom. What has got a lot of people excited is that the Knights of Ren will finally be revealed, along with new elite red Stormtroopers. There are two mysterious new characters set to one side; The rebel fighter believed to be Lando’s (Billy Dee Williams) daughter and a bounty hunter, possibly Keri Russells character?

Kylo Ren has his helmet back but this too has been repaired. Behind him C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) holds Chewbaccas Bowcaster (god knows what is going on there). We have a new rumoured robot sidekick next to BB-8 and lastly a stupid looking slug like alien behind Finn (John Boyega).

Personally I am not a fan of the poster. There is too much going on. Streaks of light criss-crossing, going up and down, while flaring out in the background. It’s over-crowded and just looks like there’s no thought behind it. This doesn’t get me excited for the film but it does peak my interest.

What do you guys think? Star Wars: Episode IX is currently set to be released on December 19th, 2019.

Awesome 80’s Anime Trailer for Star Wars: A New Hope

Fan Made Anime trailer for Star Wars: A New Hope

This is a must see for Star Wars and Anime fans! Dmitry Grozov (aka Ahriman) has created an 80’s Anime inspired trailer for Star Wars: A New Hope and it is amazing! This is truly an incredible fan tribute achieved by Dmitry, that captures key moments from A New Hope, while emulating a true 80’s/early 90’s s visual style common with such fan favourites as: Ninja Scroll, Akira, Neo Tokoyo and Mobile Suit Gundam.

I absolutely love this! Can we have a feature length film like the trailer below Disney?

Trailer Dump: Star Wars Resistance, Iron Fist & Maniac

Trailer Dump: Star Wars Resistance, Iron Fist & Maniac

Welcome back to another steaming trailer dump, featuring shows and movies from Disney’s Star Wars Resistance to Netflix’s Maniac. If you’ve missed out and let any new trailer’s slip you by, now is a time to catch up with some of the most prevalent future releases. Without further ado, dig in and hopefully find something to get excited about! First up…

Star Wars Resistance

The newest Star Wars show has released it’s first trailer, and this one is definitely geared more toward a younger audience. Not massive fans of the art style. This doesn’t look quite in the same vein as Clone Wars and Rebels. This is one for the kids to enjoy and perhaps fans of the sequel trilogy will to as it features the return of fan favourite Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), set before the events of The Force Awakens. Find more Star Wars stuff here.

Iron Fist Season 2

After a lacklustre first season and disappointing team up with The Defenders, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) returns as the Iron Fist. Now brother fights brother, as Davos believes he is worthy of the Iron Fist and becomes the Steel Serpent to fight Danny. This trailer also shows us a first look at the Daughters of the Dragon. Hopefully this season will do better. You can get your Marvel products here.

Steve McQueen’s new film looks like it’s going to be a hit. A surprising twist on your typical heist movie as the widows of murdered crooks must now take it upon themselves to help their families survive. With big money stars including Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez. Written by award winning author Gillian Flynn, known for Gone Girl. This is quickly becoming a highly anticipated movie.

Next Gen

Netflix continues to pump out quality content, and their new animated movie Next Gen looks like no exception. On par with the best of Disney Pixar and Dreamworks, it looks like there is new competition in town. Set in the near future where robots are aplenty, a young girl is dismayed with the world they live in until she makes friends with an experimental robot. It’s easy to make comparisons with other films like Big Hero 6, but this looks very heartfelt and great family fun. Hopefully we can get more animated feature films from Netflix. Featuring the voices of John Krasinski, Michael Peña and Constance Wu.

The 2009 housing crisis hurt a lot of people but apparently hit Sonny (McBride) the hardest, an incompetent criminal out for revenge, takes Realtor Cassie (DeWitt) hostage as he tries to get his own payback. This looks like a fun twisted dark comedy, where things can’t help but take a turn for the worse. Coming out August 24th.

Green Book

This powerful trailer shows the unlikely true friendship of bouncer Tony Lip (Mortensen) and pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Ali) as they navigate through the prevalent racism of America using the Green Book. There is a lot of talent amongst the main two actors alone and the energy they radiate just throughout this trailer gets us excited for the movie. A story from 1962 that seems relevant today. Will you be watching?

This dance party gets deranged in the bizarre trailer for Climax which is Step Up on drugs. This looks like it will be a visual feast and highly entertaining, though perhaps not for every average move goer. This comes from Gaspar Noé, known for the cult classic movie trips, Irreversible and Enter The Void. This looks like another entry into his mind bending filmography. We’ll have to wait and see what this movie has in store for us.

Slaughterhouse Rulez

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost team up for this dark comedy that is St. Trinian’s meets Attack the Block. Releasing on Halloween in the UK, it also stars Asa Butterfield and Michael Sheen. When a school sells off it’s land to an oil fracking company they accidentally unleash demons on their students. It looks like it’s going to be a fun romp.

This is another superb looking mind melting movie from Netflix. Starring Jonah Hill, Emma Stone and Justin Theroux as they partake in an experimental, psychological drug trial. “Pain can be destroyed.” This is my kind of movie spanning multiple genres under one funky seventies sci-fi roof, as Stone and Hill explore each other’s minds. Netflix looks like they will be stepping up the stakes set out by the Norwegian series of the same name. This short series looks like it can do great things for both Stone’s and Hill’s career, as it’s unlike anything they’ve previously done. Warning! You may get serious Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind vibes.

Star Wars: Return of the Clone Wars #CloneWarsSaved

Star Wars: Return of the Clone Wars #CloneWarsSaved

When Disney and Lucasfilm decided that The Clone Wars animated TV series was expendable, the fans exclaimed “not to me!” Five years later, in a dark Hall at San-Diego Comic-Con, during The Clone Wars tenth anniversary panel, an announcement was made… #CloneWarsSaved. Thanks to fan outcry all across the world Lucasfilm have brought back the much beloved animated show. Twelve all new episodes to be aired on Disney’s new streaming service! This is a great expression of fandom and a show of exactly what your voices can do in a community you love.

The Clone Wars went in depth on the main characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan-Kenobi, Padme Amidala and Yoda. Created great new characters such as Ahsoka Tano. Revived fan-favourites like Darth Maul. Shed light on the background characters such as Plo Koon. Even weaved a tapestry of personality and individuality into the Clones themselves. There was something to be loved by everyone in there, and it shows now more than ever with it’s revival.
